A well-known Kentucky man, affectionately called the “Wheelchair Waver,” is currently in critical condition after being struck by a drunk driver at an intersection in Edgewood. Brad Fritz, 41, who is known for enthusiastically waving at passing cars from his wheelchair, sustained life-threatening injuries in the tragic incident.
Fritz’s family revealed that he suffered severe injuries, including multiple skull fractures, a collapsed lung, a fractured pelvis, numerous broken ribs, and a broken arm that required extensive surgical intervention. Despite the extensive list of injuries, Fritz’s resilient spirit shines through, as he continues to fight for his life in the hospital.
His father, Mickey Fritz, shared updates on social media, expressing the heart-wrenching experience of watching his son struggle with the aftermath of the accident. Fritz, also known as “Champ” in the community, was initially sedated and intubated but has since been taken off the breathing tube. Concerns about his short-term memory have arisen, as he has no recollection of the events that led to his injuries.
The recent incident is eerily reminiscent of a previous tragedy that befell Fritz in 1999 when a drunk driver crashed into a car he was traveling in with friends. The accident left him with a traumatic brain injury, confined to a wheelchair, and in a coma for three months. Since then, Fritz has dedicated his life to spreading awareness about the dangers of impaired driving, especially among young people.
The driver responsible for the latest crash, James McGillicuddy, has been arrested and faces charges of operating a motor vehicle under the influence, possession of an open container in a motor vehicle, assault, and criminal mischief. This is the third time McGillicuddy has been caught with an open container in his vehicle, highlighting the dangers of driving under the influence.
Despite the challenges he faces, Brad Fritz’s fighting spirit and resilience continue to inspire those around him. His induction into the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame is a testament to his strength and determination. The community has rallied behind Fritz, offering support and encouragement as he battles for his life.
As the legal proceedings unfold, it serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of impaired driving. The hope is that justice will be served, and measures will be taken to prevent similar tragedies in the future. For now, Brad Fritz remains a symbol of courage and perseverance in the face of adversity.
