Which venomous snakes strike the fastest?

There are some snakes that are known to be the sprinters of the reptile world, with vipers leading the pack in terms of speed when it comes to venomous snakes. A recent study published in the Journal of Experimental Biology compared the striking speeds of 36 venomous snakes from three different families, revealing that vipers are the fastest among them.

The research found that vipers, particularly those that are ambush predators and prey on mammals, have the fastest attacks. The terciopelo, a viper found in regions from eastern Mexico to northern South America, emerged as the top contender with an average peak velocity of 3.5 meters per second.

Alistair Evans, a zoologist at Monash University in Melbourne, explains that the ability to strike quickly is essential for vipers as their prey, mainly mammals, have a reaction time of 60 to 400 milliseconds. This makes speed a critical factor for vipers in successfully capturing their prey. Additionally, larger snakes tend to be faster due to their increased muscle mass, much like sprinters.

The study utilized two high-speed cameras to track the striking speeds of snakes housed at Venomworld, a facility in Paris that provides venom for medical and pharmaceutical purposes. Each snake was encouraged to lunge at fake prey made of warmed ballistics gel, simulating muscle tissue.

Among the vipers tested, species such as the horned pit viper and the blunt-nosed viper exhibited striking speeds exceeding 3.3 m/s. The rough-scaled death adder, the fastest elapid snake in the study, had a strike speed of 2.2 m/s, comparable to some vipers like the eastern rock rattlesnake. The mangrove snake, the sole colubrid in the study, had a slightly slower strike speed of around 1.8 m/s.

The study also highlighted differences in the biting behavior of different snake families. Vipers were observed to deliver venom with smooth and rapid strikes, while elapids tend to bite and squeeze their prey multiple times. The Fischer’s cat snake, a colubrid not included in the speed analysis, was noted for using its fangs to create large wounds in its victim.

While the study focused heavily on vipers due to the composition of the snakes at Venomworld, there are approximately an equal number of elapid species as vipers, with colubrids being even more diverse. This suggests that there may be other snake species within these families that could rival the speed of vipers in striking at their prey.
