The Philadelphia Phillies made a bold move on Thursday by releasing outfielder Nick Castellanos. This decision comes as a result of a tumultuous tenure for Castellanos, who signed a five-year, $100 million contract in March 2022. The Phillies will be paying the remaining $20 million of his contract.

Castellanos, who is 33 years old, struggled during the 2025 season and saw a decrease in playing time, especially after the acquisition of Harrison Bader through a trade. However, the tipping point for the Phillies came in June when Castellanos brought a beer into the dugout during a game against the Miami Marlins. Alcohol is strictly prohibited in the dugout during games, and this action did not sit well with the team.

According to reports from the Athletics’ Matt Gleb, the incident escalated when Castellanos felt disrespected by manager Rob Thomson. Thomson made a strategic decision to substitute Castellanos for Johan Rojas in the eighth inning to protect a lead. Despite the team winning the game, Castellanos, who hails from Miami and had family in attendance, reacted negatively by bringing a beer into the clubhouse and confronting Thomson and the coaches.

Veteran players like Kyler Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto tried to intervene and resolve the situation, but Castellanos continued to show a lack of respect towards Thomson and hitting coach Kevin Long. Castellanos expressed his disregard for their opinions, stating that he only valued the opinions of those who had actual playing experience in the MLB.

Throughout his time with the Phillies, Castellanos reportedly felt overshadowed by other superstars on the team, such as Bryce Harper and Zack Wheeler. He believed that he was not being treated as an equal to these players, leading to a strained relationship with the organization.

Despite providing mentorship to young players on the team, Castellanos’ behavior and attitude ultimately led to his departure from the Phillies. The team had attempted to trade him in the past but faced challenges due to his high salary. The incident in Miami served as the final straw for the organization, prompting them to part ways with the talented outfielder.

As the Phillies move forward without Castellanos, they will be looking to regroup and focus on the upcoming season. The departure of Castellanos marks the end of a turbulent chapter for the team, as they strive to build a cohesive and successful roster for the future.
