Tennis, a perennial favorite of ours, faces significant challenges as of late. The lengthy season spans from January to November, making it excessively long; and the points system forces players to participate in numerous tournaments, often overwhelming their physical and mental capacities, calling for much-needed reform. The season climaxes with the final Grand Slam of the year—the US Open, concluding in September—but the ensuing late-season tour in Asia often leaves players exhausted or nursing injuries.

So why are six of the sport’s elite—Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev, Novak Djokovic, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Taylor Fritz—gathered in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for the Six Kings Slam exhibition tournament that kicks off today? The answer is straightforward. “Where else can you play three matches—just two for the top seeds—and have a chance to earn $6 million?” Fritz remarked yesterday.

While we respect a player’s opportunity to earn a living, we—along with countless tennis enthusiasts globally—are quite taken aback by the AI-generated promotional image for the tournament. From a distance, the image appears reasonably fine. However, upon closer inspection, questions arise: Why does Sinner (on the far left) resemble a younger Matt Damon, and why do both he and the Alcaraz-like figure above seem to be using the same racquet? Additionally, why does Djokovic bear an uncanny resemblance to a young Al Pacino? These are among the more accurate likenesses. The figure in the center-top is presumed to be Zverev, and the one on the far right seems to be Tsitsipas, but the individual in front on the right is virtually unidentifiable—seemingly engaged in a game of racquetball. To state the obvious: It’s surprising that a tournament with access to a $6 million prize didn’t reconsider such a glaring error stemming from AI.

(In more tangible updates from the actual players, however, Tsitsipas and Zverev have both exited after today’s opening round, setting up exciting semifinals featuring Sinner against Djokovic and Alcaraz battling Fritz tomorrow.)
