Gold has always been associated with opulence and wealth, from ancient Egyptian jewelry to modern fashion trends. The Brooklyn Museum is currently hosting an exhibition titled “Solid Gold,” which delves into the allure of this precious metal and how its significance has evolved over time. The show, curated by Matthew Yokobosky, explores gold’s universal appeal through various forms of art, fashion, film, music, and design.

The exhibition, part of the museum’s 200th anniversary celebrations, showcases around 500 items from diverse cultures around the world. Approximately half of the pieces are from the Brooklyn Museum’s own collections, featuring historic coins, Greek jewelry, Japanese screens, and Renaissance altarpieces. Yokobosky explains, “In reviewing our holdings, nearly 4,000 works are gold or have a gold aspect and span thousands of years, from ancient times to today.”

The display begins with a video of NASA’s Parker Solar Probe launch in 2018, symbolizing the sun’s connection to gold. Ancient artifacts like a sarcophagus with golden pigments and contemporary pieces like gold facial jewelry from Panama are juxtaposed to highlight the enduring fascination with gold. The exhibition also features couture gowns from designers like Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, and Cartier jewels, showcasing the influence of gold in fashion.

One section of the exhibition focuses on the environmental impact and human repercussions of gold production, highlighting the ecological transformation caused by the search for this precious metal. Additionally, the show explores how currency was used to disseminate propaganda images of powerful rulers through gold coins. Gold’s longevity as a material provides researchers and archaeologists with insights into past cultures, as it often survives through centuries without corroding or tarnishing.

“Solid Gold” offers visitors a comprehensive view of gold’s cultural significance and enduring appeal. The exhibition will be on display at the Brooklyn Museum until July 6, 2025. Whether you’re interested in art, history, fashion, or pop culture, this exhibition promises to enlighten and inspire with its exploration of the timeless allure of gold.
