Why I’m More Excited For Apple Smart Glasses Than Vision Pro

Apple’s Vision Pro: A Stepping Stone to Apple’s Smart Glasses

Apple’s Vision Pro was marketed as the future of wearable technology, but it has failed to meet expectations. With a high price tag and a bulky design, it is more of a luxury gadget than a necessity. While it boasts impressive displays and tracking features, many users find themselves reverting back to their trusty MacBooks or iPads once the initial excitement wears off.

However, there is hope on the horizon with the rumors of Apple working on smart glasses. Mark Gurman’s report about Apple developing a version of visionOS specifically for AR smart glasses has sparked excitement among tech enthusiasts. These smart glasses, though still in the works and likely a few years away from release, promise to be much more practical than the Vision Pro.

One of the major drawbacks of the Vision Pro is its limited battery life, lasting only about two hours. In contrast, smart glasses have the potential to last all day, offering a more seamless user experience. The idea of having a battery permanently attached to the goggles via a cable in your pocket is reminiscent of the days before MagSafe, where every accidental pull of a cable could send a MacBook flying across the room.

Samsung’s Project Moohan headset offers a solution by allowing the battery to detach and be replaced with another USB-C power bank, but this workaround still leaves room for improvement. The Vision Pro’s isolating nature is another issue, as it lacks the social and work-related features that would entice users away from their traditional laptops or PCs.

In comparison, smart glasses have the potential to display directions, notifications, and useful overlays while keeping users connected to the real world. The clunky app management on the Vision Pro could be streamlined with a more natural, glance-based interface on smart glasses.

While Apple’s foray into spatial computing with the Vision Pro is a step in the right direction, smart glasses hold even more promise as a lightweight, practical, and seamlessly integrated wearable tech solution. While the wait for Apple’s smart glasses may be a few years, they have the potential to make a significant impact when they finally hit the market. Stay tuned for the next evolution in wearable tech from Apple.
