Ali Jones makes bid to oust Christchurch’s deputy mayor

Former Christchurch city councillor Ali Jones is gearing up to challenge deputy mayor Pauline Cotter in the ward she narrowly lost in the last election. Jones, who was just eight votes short of defeating Cotter for the Innes Ward in 2022, will be running again in the upcoming local body elections in October.

In addition to Jones, Sara Templeton, the Heathcote Ward councillor, will be running against Mayor Phil Mauger. Meanwhile, Tony Simons, a prominent residents’ association campaigner, will be challenging Tyla Harrison-Hunt in the Riccarton Ward.

Key issues in the election will include rates increases and the potential sale of ratepayer-owned assets like Lyttelton Port Company and Orion. Jones, running as an independent, is focused on bringing energy, experience, and passion to the role. She, like Simons, advocates for cutting rates and criticizes current councillors for not doing enough in that regard.

Jones, who previously served as a councillor in the Shirley-Papanui Ward, is known for her advocacy work helping people with earthquake claims. She has been a member of the Waipapa Papanui-Innes-Central Community Board since a by-election in 2023.

On the other hand, Cotter, who has been a city councillor since 2013, plans to run under the centre-left political ticket The People’s Choice. She emphasizes the challenges of cutting rates and stresses the importance of working with others effectively.

Asset sales will also be a significant issue in the election. While Jones is open to considering asset sales, she criticizes the council for not exploring a business case presented in 2023. Cotter, on the other hand, is clear about retaining strategic assets and opposes selling assets for short-term gains.

Jones believes her independence sets her apart from Cotter, emphasizing that no one controls her decisions. She aims to bring a perspective of common sense to the council and improve delegation and procurement policies.

Ultimately, both candidates are focused on serving the community and addressing key issues facing Christchurch. The upcoming election promises to be a competitive and engaging race for the residents of the city.
