When addressing a crowd of 13,000 supporters at Forest Hills Stadium, I recounted the inspiring tale of museum workers in my union who stood up against looming layoffs. The energy and enthusiasm of the artists and art workers present at the rally underscored the significance of this campaign as a pivotal moment in artistic and creative political activism. It is clear that with sustained organization and mobilization, this movement has the potential to serve as a blueprint for future endeavors. The pivotal first step is electing Zohran Mamdani, followed by the collective effort to advocate for an affordable New York.

The momentum of this movement is already evident through the involvement of 90,000 campaign volunteers and the backing of influential unions like District Council 37, which represents 150,000 workers in the city, including museum employees like myself. Recognizing the value of work and acknowledging most art workers as integral members of the working class is essential. Many individuals in this sector are just one unforeseen expense away from financial instability. By fostering organizational structures, particularly through unions, we can harness the collective power needed to influence policy-making and governance in our city. Ensuring that individuals can afford basic necessities like housing and food is fundamental to building a thriving community for all.

The issue of affordability in New York City has been a longstanding concern, as highlighted by a 2017 call for a rent freeze by a grassroots coalition of arts leaders known as the People’s Cultural Plan. The current economic landscape paints a stark picture, with 85% of artists in the state reporting household incomes below the living wage standard. Zohran Mamdani’s commitment to affordability for all resonates strongly with the principles outlined in the People’s Cultural Plan, signaling a promising step towards addressing the economic challenges faced by artists and cultural workers.

The arts and culture sector in our city represents a staggering $110 billion industry, reflecting the immense wealth present in New York. However, the fact that 63% of artists struggle with unmanageable debt underscores the urgent need for tangible solutions to alleviate financial burdens. Mamdani’s advocacy for dignity and financial stability for all individuals, including artists, signifies a crucial step towards creating a more equitable and supportive environment for workers in the arts sector. Initiatives like a rent freeze, subsidized transportation, and childcare can significantly improve the quality of life for artists and art workers, ultimately enhancing the vibrancy of our creative community.

The broken philanthropic system poses significant challenges for artists and cultural organizations, with funding becoming increasingly scarce due to fluctuations in the financial market. This systemic issue has detrimental effects on institutional leadership and often results in detrimental cuts to essential services for art workers. The discrepancy in funding allocation between extravagant projects like a Manhattan heliport and essential arts organizations further underscores the need for a more equitable distribution of resources. By reevaluating our priorities and investing in the arts sector, we can cultivate a more sustainable and supportive environment for creative expression.

Creative labor organizing plays a pivotal role in strengthening democracy at a grassroots level, emphasizing the importance of workers’ rights and collective bargaining. A pro-union mayor like Zohran Mamdani, who actively engages with workers and demonstrates a deep understanding of the challenges faced by laborers, can serve as a powerful advocate for workplace dignity and fair treatment. By championing the rights of workers and standing in solidarity with marginalized groups, Mamdani exemplifies the kind of leadership needed to drive positive change in our city.

In conclusion, the campaign led by Zohran Mamdani represents a beacon of hope for artists, creatives, and art workers in New York City. By uniting in solidarity and advocating for tangible policy changes, we can build a more inclusive and supportive community that values the contributions of all individuals. The time to act is now, and together, we can pave the way for a brighter and more equitable future for the arts in our city.
