In a heartwarming event in downtown Miami, baby pigs Glinda and Elphaba stole the show and won’t have to worry about being served as Christmas dinner at a Cuban American family’s table.

Mayor of Miami-Dade County, Daniella Levine Cava, granted public pardons to the two piglets in a local tradition inspired by the White House’s Thanksgiving turkey pardoning.

Named after characters from the musical “Wicked,” Glinda and Elphaba, 4-month-old piglets, will spend their full lives at an animal sanctuary in the south of Miami.

The tan-and-black duo, resembling pudgy beagles in size, enjoyed apple and orange slices but seemed more interested in nibbling on the plastic grass in their enclosure.

Thanks to the pardons, Glinda and Elphaba were saved from being part of the thousands of pigs that would be cooked for Nochebuena dinners in Cuba, South Florida, and other places.

After the ceremony, the pigs were taken to their new home, becoming the 12th and 13th recipients of such pardons over the years.
