The 27th Costume Designers Guild Awards took place on Thursday evening, with “Wicked” and “Conclave” emerging as the big winners of the night. Paul Tazewell, the designer for “Wicked,” took home the award for Excellence in Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film, marking his second win after previously winning for “Hamilton” in 2021. If he wins the costuming Oscar, Tazewell will make history as the first Black man to win in the Academy category.
In the Excellence in Period Film category, Linda Muir was honored for her work on “Nosferatu.” The awards ceremony, which recognized excellence in film, TV, and short-form costume design, was hosted by Jackie Tohn.
During the event, it was announced that the guild would be launching an auction of costumes from film and TV to support the IATSE Emergency Relief Fund. Costumes from “House of the Dragon,” Shiz University costumes from “Wicked,” and Bob Mackie Cher sketches are among the items up for auction.
Costume Designers Guild executive director Brigitta Romanov emphasized the power of unity in her speech, highlighting the support provided by unions across the entertainment industry during challenging times. Guild president Terry Ann Gordon also spoke about the resilience and solidarity within the community.
Janelle Monáe was honored with the Vanguard Spotlight award and dedicated her award to the working-class individuals who play a vital role in the industry, including seamstresses, teachers, and laborers. Zoe Saldaña, who received the Spotlight Award, expressed her appreciation for costume designers and the impact their work has on her acting process.
