Florida Sheriff’s Wife Arrested for Alleged Role in Gambling Operation
From lovebirds to jailbirds.
Robin Severance-Lopez, the estranged wife of Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez, has joined her husband behind bars on similar charges related to a massive gambling operation. Homeland Security Investigations arrested Severance-Lopez on state charges for conspiracy to commit racketeering, following her husband’s arrest on felony racketeering charges weeks prior.
Allegations Against Sheriff Marcos Lopez
Lopez is accused of protecting the gambling operation in exchange for personal payments and campaign contributions. The operation, which involved four other defendants, ran a lottery, slot machines, and a “gambling house” out of a business known as Fusion Social Club in Kissimmee, Florida.
Authorities estimate that the organization took in over $21.6 million in illicit proceeds. Governor Ron DeSantis suspended Lopez and appointed a Florida Highway Patrol official to serve as the county’s sheriff in his place.
Legal Consequences
Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Mark Glass emphasized the importance of upholding integrity and character within law enforcement. He stated, “This case revealed that Lopez violated the trust and integrity expected of him as the duly elected sheriff of Osceola County.”
Severance-Lopez’s alleged involvement in her husband’s scheme has not been detailed by authorities. The couple’s arrests have rocked the community and raised questions about law enforcement standards.
County Response and Legal History
County Manager Don Fisher clarified that the county had no role in the investigation and expressed readiness to support the interim sheriff appointed by the governor. In a separate incident in December, Lopez pleaded no contest to violating state records laws for posting an image of the body of 13-year-old Madeline Soto online. The boyfriend of the girl’s mother has been charged in connection with her death.
The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to inquiries regarding the case. The community awaits further developments as the legal proceedings unfold.
