A shocking incident unfolded at Bay Lane Elementary School in Muskego, Wisconsin, when a substitute teacher, Christopher Rias, arrived at the school clearly intoxicated. The 30-year-old teacher, who already had a history of DUIs, was seen stumbling out of his car and struggling to walk in a straight line as he made his way onto the school campus.

Security cameras captured the disturbing scene as Rias, with slurred speech and bloodshot eyes, wandered around the school premises, interacting with students while clearly under the influence. Despite being banned from drinking alcohol due to his bail conditions for a previous DUI arrest, Rias had a blood alcohol level more than four times the legal driving limit when tested hours after his arrival at the school.

Police body cam footage showed Rias being handcuffed in the school parking lot after school officials contacted the authorities. The drunk teacher, bewildered by his predicament, asked the arresting officers, “What did I do?” to which a cop bluntly responded, “You showed up to work drunk.”

Rias, who had an active warrant for his third DUI offense, was taken into custody for his fourth DUI, violating his bail conditions, and the active warrant. He is currently being held at Muskego County Jail.

The incident raised concerns about the safety of the students at Bay Lane Elementary School. However, the school principal, Robin Schrot, reassured parents that the students were never in danger and that Rias had been hired through a third-party contractor, Kelly Education.

In a statement, Schrot emphasized the school’s commitment to ensuring a safe and professional learning environment for every student. The school administration is working closely with Kelly Education to review the incident, enforce appropriate policies, and demand a full accounting of their screening and oversight processes.

This alarming incident serves as a reminder of the importance of thorough background checks and stringent policies when hiring individuals to work in educational settings. The safety and well-being of students should always be the top priority, and incidents like this highlight the need for vigilance and accountability in ensuring a secure learning environment.
