Four-time Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe is set to collaborate once again with Brazil’s Bárbara Paz in the upcoming near-future drama, “Cuddle,” marking Paz’s fiction feature debut.
Dafoe’s relationship with Paz and Hector Babenco, Paz’s late husband, began with the film “My Hindu Friend,” where Dafoe portrayed a dying filmmaker based on Babenco and Paz had a significant role.
In “Cuddle,” Dafoe takes on the role of Dante, a professional cuddler who provides platonic comfort to individuals seeking connection in a world where affection is scarce. Despite his calm demeanor, Dante battles a painkiller addiction and a sense of loneliness, only finding solace in the presence of his dog. However, a chance encounter disrupts his routine, leading to an unexpected intimacy.
The project, described as a poignant exploration of touch and connection in a disconnected age, is a collaboration between Conspiração, Infinity Hill, and Paz’s company, BP.
Dafoe, excited about the project, expressed his anticipation for working with Paz once again. The film aims to delve into themes of loneliness, human touch, and overcoming challenges, capturing the essence of contemporary society.
Aside from “Cuddle,” Dafoe has a lineup of upcoming projects, including collaborations with renowned directors such as Wes Anderson and Jennifer Peedom. He also holds the position of artistic director for Theater at the Venice Biennale.
With an impressive career spanning across film and theater, Dafoe continues to showcase his versatility and talent in a diverse range of roles. His involvement in “Cuddle” adds another layer to his already illustrious filmography, promising a compelling exploration of human connection and vulnerability.
