The highly anticipated “Wings of Fire” animated series has officially found its showrunner for the Amazon Prime Video adaptation. Aaron Waltke has been announced as the showrunner, executive producer, and co-writer for the series, joining forces with Tui T. Sutherland, the original author of the book series, who will also co-write and executive produce. Marc Resteghini will round out the executive producing team under his Jack Tar Productions banner.
The project was initially reported to be in development at Amazon in February 2024, following the cancellation of a previous version at Netflix with a different creative team. Waltke, a seasoned veteran in the animation world, brings a wealth of experience to the table. He is best known for his work on Guillermo Del Toro’s “Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia” at Netflix, where he received a Daytime Emmy for best writing for an animated series in 2018. Waltke also served as showrunner on the spinoff series “Wizards: Tales of Arcadia” and worked on the critically-acclaimed “Star Trek: Prodigy.”
With 15 books in the main “Wings of Fire” novel collection and a graphic novel version, the series is based on a popular franchise that has sold over 27 million copies worldwide. The official logline of the show teases an epic tale of seven dragon tribes locked in a generations-long conflict over a mysterious treasure, with a prophecy and five dragonets at the center of the narrative.
Resteghini, a former head of series development at Amazon MGM Studios, brings a wealth of experience to the project. Having worked on hit series like “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Jack Ryan,” Resteghini’s track record speaks for itself. He is currently involved in developing new projects like “Young Sherlock” and “The Girl in the Lake” with Scarlett Johansson.
The “Wings of Fire” animated series promises to be an exciting addition to the Amazon Prime Video lineup, with a talented creative team at the helm. Fans of the book series and animation enthusiasts alike have much to look forward to as the show takes flight.
