Karen Bass has proposed hosting a World Cup watch party at MacArthur Park.
Yes, that MacArthur Park — known for its issues with drugs, gangs, crime, and homelessness, and often seen as a symbol of the city’s struggle to uphold law and order.
It seems unbelievable that Bass considers MacArthur Park suitable for public gatherings. Even with recent police interventions, the park has long been unsafe, even during daylight hours on weekdays.
Under the oversight of Bass and Councilwoman Eunisses Hernandez, this once-iconic park has deteriorated into a scene resembling a zombie apocalypse, marking a point of embarrassment for the city.
The notion seems baffling — perhaps a result of either arrogance or a lack of awareness of what the park has turned into over the years.
The California Post has consistently reported on its decline and urged for remedial action.Â
Federal authorities, in collaboration with the LAPD and LA County Sheriff’s Department, have spearheaded efforts to address these issues through recent operations.
These efforts have sparked hope that the park might eventually be restored, yet much work remains, with minimal support from the city.
Hosting a World Cup watch party in MacArthur Park seems unthinkable — unless.
Unless the international attention and influx of spectators compel Bass to finally address the park’s issues.

The political pressure of a challenging re-election campaign — one that Bass seems to be struggling with at the moment — might encourage the mayor and the local City Council member to fulfill their duties.
Unforeseen events have occurred before.
California and LA face a unique opportunity with the upcoming Olympic Games in 2028.
Hosting such a significant event provides a chance to mend what is broken and bring together different parts of the city in a united effort.
With global attention, what seemed impossible yesterday becomes achievable tomorrow.
We cannot delay action until the last minute, as seen with Bass and Hernandez’s late announcement of a watch party mere days before the tournament’s start.
MacArthur Park represents a challenge for Bass and Hernandez to rectify the issues — eliminating drug dealers, criminals, and homeless encampments.
In days, not years.
We remain skeptical.
We hope to be proven wrong.
