In a recent social media tirade, Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy unleashed a verbal barrage against an ABC News Philadelphia reporter, accusing her of a âbait-and-switchâ tactic following an antisemitic incident at his Barstool Sansom Street bar in Philadelphia.
Portnoy took to social media on Monday to unveil a tense interaction with the unnamed female journalist.
He alleged that the reporter attempted to link the incident to him, Barstool, and âwhite men,â referencing a dubious quotation from âsome professor at the Sportocratic University or whatever.â
âSo ABC News Philadelphia, they reached out. They practically begged me for an interview. They provided the name of the reporterâjust some reporterâand then did a classic bait and switch,â Portnoy stated.
He elaborated, âA different reporter showed up this morning. Initially, she posed reasonable questions about the bar: how the incident unfolded, accountability, and so forth. But then she pivoted, engaging in what I can only describe as typical media trickery.â
According to Portnoy, the reporter referenced an ambiguous quote from unnamed professors who asserted that Barstool âfosters a culture of harassment.â
When he demanded specifics, the reporter claimed the information was sourced from a journal and faculty at the University of Virginiaâyet failed to provide any verification or context.
âSheâs likeâwell, she pulls a quote out of thin air from, I donât even know, a fictional journal, some professor from the Sportocratic University. Itâs like, âThey say Barstool Sports creates a culture of harassment,â effectively implying that Iâm accountable for this occurring at my own establishment,â Portnoy expressed.
âIâve never heard this quote before. Oh, so youâre telling me some liberal college professors disapprove of Barstool? I asked, âWell, who actually said that? And what is this evenâjournal? We went back and forth. Austin, who was present, started recording it. This ridiculous encounter,â Portnoy continued.
The interview deteriorated as Portnoy redirected the focus, accusing academic institutions of fostering far more hate than Barstool could ever hope to.
âThe real culprits are colleges that allow Jewish students to be harassed non-stop. Iâve been calling this out for ages,â he retorted.
âWhoâs proliferating more hate in todayâs world? Can you genuinely claim itâs Barstool Sports and white men, or is it college campuses?â
Despite his attempts to steer the conversation, the reporter, determined to uphold her âjournalistic integrity,â refused to engage, insisting that Portnoy respond to her queries.
âYouâre not in charge of this interview,â she snapped back.
Portnoy, exasperated, retorted, âI donât adhere to those rules⊠Iâm a journalist as well. I operate a substantial media organization. You need to answer my question.â
When she persisted, he abruptly shut his laptop.

So @6abc begged me to do an interview about the incident at our bar. Since it was local I agreed. Then the reporter tried to say Barstool and I and white men were responsible for the incident. Austin started recording once it got contentious pic.twitter.com/ug8CX83HHp

Earlier reports indicate a disturbing incident transpired on Saturday night at Portnoyâs Barstool Sports bar in Philadelphia.
Authorities are currently investigating a situation where a Temple University student, while receiving bottle service, had a waitress carry a sign featuring an antisemitic message: âF*** Jews.â
Portnoy, who identifies as Jewish, took to X to convey his outrage and revulsion over the incident, stating he was shaken for two hours.
He declared it his mission to âruin these individualsâ and that he is âcoming for your throat.â
Following his initial outburst, he moderated his tone and announced plans to send those involved to Auschwitz, the site of the former Nazi concentration and extermination camp, to learn about the Holocaust.
He revealed that he immediately fired all staff who allowed this to occur.
âLetâs attempt to transform this hideous incident into a potential learning opportunity,â he suggested.
