X’s New Feature Reveals Right-Wing Accounts Possibly Based Outside the U.S.

Recently, X introduced a new feature that brought to light the fact that several right-wing “America First” accounts may actually be operating from locations outside the United States. However, the reliability of this data is now being questioned.

The highlight of X’s new “About This Account” feature is the geographic location of users, sparking significant interest and discussion among users.

A prominent left-wing influencer, Micah Erfan, caused a stir by sharing a gallery of MAGA accounts supposedly based in countries like Japan, New Zealand, Pakistan, and Thailand. In response, Erfan commented, “This is total armageddon for the online right.”

Although some of the flagged accounts, such as the ostensibly Pakistan-based @American, have a smaller following, others like MAGANationX boast hundreds of thousands of followers.

Nikita Bier, X’s director of product, announced that the feature is being rolled out globally as a crucial step towards safeguarding the integrity of the global online community. However, some users have reported inaccuracies in their listed locations. Bier admitted that the data for older accounts may not be entirely accurate and assured users that any discrepancies would be ironed out by Tuesday.

The Verge highlighted the fact that while there are undeniably fake accounts and troll farms operating from outside the U.S., several listed locations appear dubious. This confusion could be attributed to factors such as travel, global team operations, VPN usage, or outdated IP addresses.
