Summary
- Wear OS 6 is currently being released
- Eligible models: Pixel Watch 2 and 3 only
- Material 3 Expressive UI introduced
- Auto-launch feature for Google Maps
As the Pixel Watch 4 arrives on store shelves today, Google has initiated the rollout of its Wear OS 6 update for older Pixel watches, but only for specific models.
Our reviewer, Chris Martin, has been testing the new Pixel Watch 4 for the last week and seems to be enjoying the experience of Google’s latest offering, for the most part.
While we aren’t ready to give our final review yet, here’s a quick tip: update your previous Pixel Watch, and you might find you won’t need to purchase the latest version.
Limited Benefits
Google has confirmed that “All eligible Pixel Watch devices will receive Wear OS 6 through the October 2025 software update starting today.”
However, only the Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3 are mentioned here. The original Pixel Watch, launched in 2022, is notably absent.
There was hope that the original Pixel Watch might be included for the Wear OS 6 upgrade since it was promised support until October 2025, but that seems not to be the case.

What’s New in Watch OS 6?
The new Wear OS edition introduces Google’s latest Material 3 Expressive UI design, which has just rolled out to smartphones following the launch of the Pixel 10.
Owners of the Pixel Watch 2 and 3 will notice enhancements like larger buttons, rounded font styles, and updated icon designs. Additionally, there will be dynamic color theming based on your current watch face, along with refreshed tile templates and layouts.
One of the standout features is the Google Maps auto-launch capability. If you start navigation on your phone, it will seamlessly transition to your Pixel Watch.
Moreover, users can now add time to an active Safety Check.
To check for the Wear OS 6 update on your Pixel Watch 2 or 3, navigate to Settings > System > System updates.
