Steve Federico, the father of Logan Federico—a 22-year-old college student tragically murdered by a career criminal in South Carolina earlier this year—vented his anger at the state’s lenient crime policies during a testimony this past Monday.
Earlier accounts highlighted that Logan was fatally shot inside a Columbia, South Carolina, rental home by Alexander Dickey, a perpetrator already on a streak of thefts and credit card fraud, according to the Columbia Police Department.
Logan Federico, a college student hailing from Waxhaw, North Carolina, was visiting friends in South Carolina when she became the victim of a senseless act of violence.
Dickey, after pilfering firearms and credit cards from a nearby residence, broke into the rental property, entered Logan’s room, and shot her while she begged for her life.
Afterward, he fled the scene in a stolen vehicle, using the pilfered credit cards. Police chased him as he disappeared into the woods, where he allegedly broke into another house and set it ablaze before being apprehended after a standoff in Gaston.
Dickey now faces a slew of charges including murder, two counts of first-degree burglary, unlawful possession of a weapon, and larceny.
As a convicted felon, Alexander Dickey’s lengthy criminal history raises troubling questions about how a person with such a record could be free to commit further crimes.
During a press conference earlier this year, Steve Federico, overwhelmed with grief, shared his thoughts. “I am Logan Haley Federico’s father, known simply as ‘Dad’ or her hero. Unfortunately, on that fateful day, I could not be her hero,” he lamented. “My daughter was vibrant and dedicated, a loving individual chasing her dream to become a teacher—someone who adored children of all ages.”
In an emotional message to Dickey, he stated, “You can’t kill my spirit. You may steal my daughter’s life, but you cannot diminish the love shared between her, her family, and her friends.”
This Monday, Steve Federico’s frustration boiled over during a North Carolina House Judiciary hearing, where he exclaimed, “You messed with the wrong dad!”

Later that evening, Steve Federico appeared on Fox News with Laura Ingraham, further discussing the hearing. He expressed outrage after a North Carolina Democrat conflated his daughter’s name with that of Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian refugee recently murdered on the state’s light rail by a different perpetrator. “How could you not know her name!” Federico exclaimed during the hearing.
In a follow-up chat with Laura Ingraham, Steve articulated his feelings, stating that the mix-up was not just an error but a moment of humiliation. “Her picture was right there. They both had blonde hair and were beautiful—but they didn’t even recognize Logan,” he conveyed.
