President Zelenskyy and Ukraine have grasped a crucial reality: since Donald Trump’s ascendance to power, the United States has become a less reliable ally for democracies globally. This shift in trust is starkly illustrated by Ukraine’s decision to withhold information from Trump regarding a significant operation targeting Russian bombers responsible for civilian casualties in Ukraine.

Axios reported:

Ukraine executed unprecedented drone strikes deep within Russian territory, targeting multiple strategic bomber bases, as confirmed by Ukrainian officials and circulated videos.

…

Notably, Ukraine did not inform the Trump administration about the attack beforehand, according to a Ukrainian official. A U.S. official corroborated that the Trump administration was kept in the dark.

A Ukrainian official revealed to Axios that this operation was meticulously planned for over a year by the country’s security service.

Additional insights from Ukraine:

The operation, dubbed “Pavutyna,” successfully targeted 41 Russian strategic aircraft, after a year and a half of preparation. President Zelensky personally oversaw the operation, executed by Vasyl Malyuk and the security service team. Sources indicate that the operation posed significant logistical challenges.

Ukraine’s decision to bypass Trump stems from a deep-seated fear that he might share their strategic plans with Putin, an action that could jeopardize the operation. This attack, which has been likened to a “Pearl Harbor” for Russia, resulted in the loss of numerous bombers and showcased an intricately coordinated plan involving drones transported covertly across Siberia.

This operation required extensive planning and was precisely the type of intelligence that Trump might have inadvertently leaked, reinforcing the notion that his presidency has eroded trust among democratic nations.

While Zelenskyy faced Trump during a tense meeting in the White House, he astutely chose to keep him unaware of the operation, thereby delivering a significant blow for democracy, while Trump appeared to play the role of Putin’s unwitting ally.
