Approximately 100 neglected cats were recently rescued from a dilapidated Long Island home, where the owner may have been selling the felines online for exorbitant prices, according to authorities.

The Suffolk County SPCA received an anonymous tip leading them to the West Islip residence, where they discovered over 80 matted Maine Coon cats in dire conditions. The cats were covered in dirt and fleas, suffering from malnutrition and open sores.

SPCA chief Roy Gross described the scene as “deplorable,” with the overpowering stench of cat urine and feces permeating the air. The floors were littered with trash, creating a hazardous environment for both the cats and any human occupants.

The rescue operation lasted nearly 24 hours, with volunteers working tirelessly to remove the cats from the hazardous situation. Grace Etzelsberger, the 66-year-old owner of the home, was charged with misdemeanor animal neglect. Authorities are also investigating whether she was operating as a licensed cat breeder, as her website and social media accounts promoting her cattery have been taken down.

Despite the dire conditions, all the rescued cats are now receiving medical treatment and are available for adoption. Local rescue groups have stepped in to assist with finding loving homes for these neglected animals.

Neighbors expressed shock and concern over the situation, highlighting the potential health risks posed by the unsanitary conditions. The condemned house will undergo further inspections to ensure that all cats have been safely removed.

The community has rallied together to support these rescued felines, with many individuals eager to provide a better life for the cats who have endured such neglect. The collaborative efforts of rescue organizations and compassionate individuals have given these cats a second chance at a happy and healthy life.
