A Chicago Man Receives 15-Year Sentence for Armed Robbery in West Town

A Chicago man, Esteban Ocampo, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to armed robbery in a case that involved robbing two victims at gunpoint in West Town last year. The sentencing was handed down by Judge James Obbish following Ocampo’s guilty plea, as per court records.

The incident occurred in January 2024 when Ocampo and his accomplice, Richard Vinet, confronted two men who had just exited an Uber on the 400 block of North Ogden Avenue. The victims, aged 39 and 52, were robbed of their phones, wallets, and a Coach backpack at gunpoint by Ocampo and Vinet, who brandished handguns during the attack.

During the robbery, Vinet held one victim at gunpoint while Ocampo robbed the other victim. Ocampo then fired shots into the air from a revolver in an attempt to intimidate the victims and ensure their compliance.

Despite their efforts, Ocampo and Vinet failed to take one victim’s Apple Watch. The victim used the watch to call 911, and responding officers were able to track the stolen phones to River North using its GPS capabilities.

Police apprehended Vinet near the 500 block of North Franklin Street and Ocampo near the 400 block of North Wells Street. Vinet was found in possession of both victims’ phones, while officers recovered the Coach backpack from Ocampo’s parked car.

As per Illinois law, Ocampo’s 15-year sentence will be eligible for a 50% reduction for good behavior, along with 839 days of credit earned while awaiting trial in jail.

Meanwhile, Vinet’s case is still pending, with a court date scheduled for January 6.
