As an English teacher, I often find myself looking for funny short stories to lighten up the mood in my classroom. While classics like Romeo and Juliet and Of Mice and Men are great, sometimes you just need a good laugh. So, I decided to compile a list of hilarious short stories that are perfect for middle and high school students.

Here are some of my top picks:

1. Ruthless by William DeMille

This darkly humorous tale follows a man seeking revenge, only to have it backfire in the worst way possible. Perfect for sparking discussions on morality and consequences.

2. They’re Made Out of Meat by Terry Bisson

Two aliens discuss the strange life-form they’ve discovered, which turns out to be humans. A hilarious take on our everyday activities from an outsider’s perspective.

3. Charles by Shirley Jackson

This story about the worst kindergarten student ever will have your students chuckling. It’s a great example of situational irony and characterization.

4. The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant

When a woman loses a borrowed necklace, she goes to great lengths to replace it, only to discover a shocking truth. A classic tale of irony and materialism.

5. A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift

Swift’s satirical essay suggests a shocking solution to poverty in Ireland. A thought-provoking and darkly humorous take on social issues.

6. Joy by Anton Chekhov

This story follows a man who becomes famous overnight, much to the surprise of his family. A light-hearted take on fame and fortune.

7. Growing Down by Shel Silverstein

In this poem, a grumpy old man learns to “grow down” and discovers the joys of childhood. A whimsical and heartwarming tale.
