A man from Chicago has been sentenced to 22 years in prison after carjacking a seller on Facebook Marketplace while under electronic monitoring for a previous attempted murder charge against a Cook County sheriff’s deputy.

25-year-old Dewon Cathion was sentenced by Judge Adrienne Davis after pleading guilty to charges of aggravated vehicular hijacking and attempted first-degree murder, as per court documents.

Cathion’s legal issues began on Thanksgiving night in 2020 when prosecutors assert he fired shots at an off-duty sheriff’s deputy near a gas station located on the 3000 block of West Van Buren Street. The deputy, who was in uniform but driving his personal vehicle, came under fire from two individuals in a separate car, according to a report by the Chicago Police Department.

A month later, authorities charged Cathion with attempted murder, and Judge Arthur Willis set a bail amount of $1 million for his detention. However, in early 2021, Judge Davis reduced the bail to $75,000 and released him on electronic monitoring, with strict instructions for “NO MOVEMENT” meaning he was to remain at home at all times.

Unfortunately, prosecutors stated that Cathion breached this order at least once—on February 22, 2022—when he left home to commit a carjacking from a man he had arranged to meet via Facebook Marketplace.

Allegedly, Cathion had negotiated to purchase shoes and a sweater from the victim, meeting him on the West Side. The victim drove to the location in a 2018 Alfa Romeo, where Cathion approached with an accomplice. During the encounter, it is reported that the accomplice pointed a firearm at the seller’s chest, demanding he exit his vehicle. Cathion then took the shoes and sweater from the backseat before instructing his accomplice to drive off in the Alfa Romeo.

While investigators indicated that Cathion fled on foot, they later connected him to the crime through Facebook, Cash App transactions, and GPS data from his ankle monitor.

Although the victim identified a different individual in a photo lineup, prosecutors highlighted that Cathion has a distinct J-shaped scar on his right hand that aligned with the description provided by the victim immediately after the incident.

As part of Judge Davis’ sentencing, Cathion will serve half of a 16-year sentence for the carjacking, along with 85% of a consecutive six-year sentence for the attempted murder charge.
