Democratic candidate Keishan Scott, 24, secured a significant victory in the South Carolina House of Representatives, becoming one of the youngest members. Representing District 50, Scott won with nearly 71% of the votes, defeating his GOP opponent William Oden. A first-generation college graduate, Scott has prioritized access to healthcare, quality education, workforce empowerment, and infrastructure development. His win comes after the unexpected resignation of Democrat Will Wheeler, setting the stage for a special election. Scott’s landslide victory aligns with the Democratic Party’s efforts to support younger leaders. However, Democratic strategist James Carville criticized this approach, calling it “jackassery” for focusing on replacing older Democrats rather than challenging Republicans. The passing of three House Democrats, all in their 70s, in 2025 has raised concerns about the potential impact on passing legislation aligned with former President Donald Trump’s agenda. Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin praised Scott’s win, highlighting the voters’ support for strong Democratic leaders advocating for working families nationwide. “This victory is not mine alone, but it belongs to all of the people in District 50 that got out and exercised their right to vote,” Scott said in a speech posted on Facebook.
