Six-Time Convicted Felon Accused of Carjacking During Arranged Encounter

A man with a history of criminal convictions is facing new charges after allegedly carjacking a victim at gunpoint during a planned meeting through a gay dating app in Chicago. Dysean Smith, 30, is currently charged with vehicular hijacking following the incident that took place on December 21 in the 10600 block of South Michigan Avenue.

The victim reported to the police that he had arranged to meet someone for a sexual encounter in the area of 107th Street and Michigan Avenue using the dating app Jack’d. Upon arrival in his 2006 Pontiac G6, the victim was approached by Smith, who he did not recognize from the app profile.

Despite his initial doubts, the victim allowed Smith into his vehicle and they drove to an abandoned lot. However, the encounter took a dangerous turn when Smith demanded payment for their meeting. When the victim refused, Smith allegedly brandished a gun, causing the victim to fear for his life.

In a moment of desperation, the victim managed to swat the gun away and flee the vehicle, seeking help. Smith then took control of the car and drove away. Police were able to locate the stolen vehicle with the help of a helicopter and apprehended Smith after a brief pursuit. The victim positively identified Smith in a photo lineup.

Following the incident, Judge James Murphy ordered Smith to be detained on charges of aggravated vehicular hijacking. Additionally, the Illinois Department of Corrections revoked Smith’s parole due to the new allegations.

Records from the state show that Smith had previously served four concurrent 12-year prison sentences for armed robberies in 2018. Earlier convictions included offenses related to narcotics in 2016 and gun possession in 2015.

It is evident that Smith’s criminal past has caught up with him once again, leading to serious consequences for his actions. The victim’s quick thinking and bravery in the face of danger ultimately led to Smith’s arrest and the recovery of the stolen vehicle.
