The New York Knicks are facing tough times after a disappointing 114-97 loss to the Dallas Mavericks. Following the game, a former Knick and seven-time NBA All-Star hinted that changes need to be made for the team to turn things around.
During the halftime break with the Knicks trailing 75-47, the NBA on NBC panel consisting of Maria Taylor, Carmelo Anthony, Tracy McGrady, and Vince Carter discussed the situation. Anthony, a legendary Knick player, commended Jalen Brunson for trying to motivate the team during the huddle. McGrady pointed out the evident friction within the group that needs to be resolved for any improvement to take place.
When Taylor inquired about what needed to be done, McGrady simply stated, “Somebody gotta go.” While McGrady didn’t elaborate on who or what needs to change, Anthony expressed his belief that the Knicks will likely stay put before the trade deadline. Despite their recent struggles, the team had a strong start to the season, winning the 2025 NBA Cup and maintaining a solid position in the Eastern Conference.
However, the Knicks have hit a rough patch, going just 2-11 in their last 13 games. Some attribute their struggles to Karl-Anthony Towns’ underwhelming performance, the adjustment to a new coach in Mike Brown, or the pressure on key players like Jalen Brunson.
With a record of 25-18, the Knicks are still in a favorable position in the Eastern Conference standings. While they hold the third spot, teams like the Toronto Raptors, Philadelphia 76ers, Orlando Magic, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Miami Heat are close behind, posing a threat to their playoff hopes.
In a midseason report card, Knicks analyst David Vertsberger gave coach Mike Brown a B grade for his efforts in his first season with the team. Despite winning the NBA Cup, Brown faces challenges with Towns’ inconsistent performance and the team’s recent struggles. Guerschon Yabusele received the lowest grade with an F, while Brunson and Towns earned B+ and C+ grades, respectively.
As the Knicks navigate through a rough patch, the pressure is mounting for them to address their issues and get back on track. Changes may be necessary for the team to rediscover their winning ways and secure a spot in the playoffs. Only time will tell if the Knicks can overcome their current challenges and return to their winning form.
