An 82-year-old woman is accused of fatally shooting her husband inside a nursing facility in South Carolina, an act that authorities now believe was premeditated, according to various reports.
Harriet Kay Recker was apprehended on September 12, after she allegedly shot her 81-year-old husband, Dennis Recker, at the Preston Health Center merely one day after his admission for medical treatment, as confirmed by the Beaufort County Sheriffās Office to WTOC.
At the time of the tragic event, a neighbor who had driven Harriet to the facility was giving them a tour of the room but had to step out briefly to get an additional chair, as detailed in court testimonies.
Upon returning to the room, the neighbor reportedly heard a loud noise and rushed back, finding the 82-year-old woman with a revolver while her husband suffered a gunshot wound to the chest.
Witnesses state that before succumbing to his injuries, Dennis uttered, āShe shot me.ā
Despite attempts to save him, he died from his injuries.
Authorities later discovered a mysterious note in Harrietās purse, which mirrored another note found among financial papers at her residence, stating, āTo you all, this has just been too much for me, I so wish I could do it with the wonderful family we have, so many good friends.ā
The note elaborated, āWe canāt have a life without someone, and that someone canāt be me, as I am not strong enough or smart enough to do all this,ā as reported by the outlet.
Additional evidence, including financial papers and interviews, indicated the possibility of premeditation regarding the shooting, authorities asserted.
Harriet was admitted to Beaufort County Jail on the same day, facing charges of murder and unlawful possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to court files.
Following the court proceedings, the judge identified probable cause and referred the case to a grand jury.
The elderly suspect is currently being held without bail.
Ted Dwemoh, a Beaufort County resident who previously provided pest control services to the Reckers at their home in Sun City, described Harriet as a kind-hearted woman eager to assist others.
He recounted that she was āalways lovingā and recognized her as āthe nicest person in Sun City,ā he mentioned to the outlet.
