The Department of Justice (DOJ) has escalated its efforts against former Congressman George Santos, filing a supplemental sentencing letter that demands a prison term nearly double that of his original sentence, pushing for an almost 7.5-year incarceration.

With just days remaining before his sentencing date on April 25, DOJ prosecutors presented a pointed letter to Judge Joanna Seybert, asserting that Santos has exhibited “no remorse” for his actions. They referenced his social media activity, where he criticized federal authorities and positioned himself as a victim of what he perceives to be prosecutorial overreach.

In what can only be described as a theatrical complaint, the DOJ highlighted Santos’s tweets in which he portrayed himself as a “scapegoat.” He went so far as to accuse the DOJ of being lenient towards drug traffickers and human smugglers while labeling the political elite a “cabal.”

One particularly colorful tweet included in the DOJ’s memorandum reads:

“Hi, my name is George Santos, and the DOJ has had a hard-on for me since December of 2022. I refuse to let them break me or my spirit, and that makes them big Mad… they have used elaborate language to drag me and hinder my ability to earn income… Long story short, I will NOT succumb to their soul-crushing antics, and that makes them furious. I will, however, remind everyone that they want me to go to prison for 87 months while they let sex traffickers walk freely, give drug lords slaps on the wrist, and most importantly, refuse to prosecute the cabal of pedophiles running around in every power structure in the world, including the US Government.”

Since his election in 2022, George Santos has been a focal point of criticism from both the left and certain factions within the Republican Party. In a previous statement to , Santos mentioned that he had encountered up to 70 reporters camped outside his Congressional office on multiple occasions.

Despite his controversial reputation, Santos positioned himself as one of the most conservative members of his freshman class in Congress. He has been a vocal supporter of , which has aligned with his political narrative.

Santos received a 100% score from Heritage Action for America during the 118th Congress, indicating his full alignment with their conservative policy positions.

Yet, despite this perfect score, Santos’s time in Congress was fleeting. He was expelled from the House on December 1, 2023, following a 311–114 vote, after revelations concerning extensive fabrications in his personal and professional history, alongside legal troubles that included guilty pleas for wire fraud and identity theft.

Recall that George Santos faced charges and was arrested in May 2023 after a federal jury returned a 13-count indictment against him.

Among the charges were seven counts of wire fraud, three counts of money laundering, and one count of theft of public funds. The indictment suggested that Santos was the target of overzealous prosecution.

In May, he was indicted on five counts of wire fraud linked to a scheme soliciting political contributions. By August of the same year, Santos pleaded guilty to two felony counts: wire fraud and identity theft.
