Despite being one of Disney’s flagship series, “Alien: Earth” is yet to secure a renewal for a second season. While reviews for “Alien: Earth” have been largely positive, some fans are disappointed with the direction taken in the series, particularly regarding the treatment of the iconic Xenomorph and the alteration of the franchise’s timeline.

Since the original 1979 film, which introduced audiences to Ellen Ripley and the terrifying Xenomorph aboard the Nostromo, the franchise has had a lasting impact on science fiction. Over 30 years later, FX has brought this predatory menace back to its origins.

Creator Noah Hawley, celebrated for his work on “Fargo” and “Legion,” serves as showrunner and director, while Ridley Scott, who helmed the first “Alien” film, serves as an executive producer. Additionally, Scott’s involvement extends to the upcoming film “Alien: Romulus,” slated for release in August 2024.

“Alien: Earth,” along with “Alien: Romulus,” was envisioned as a multi-season narrative designed to further expand the universe and captivate a new generation of fans. As we await Disney’s decision on a second season, we have compiled all the latest information regarding “Alien: Earth” and its potential future.

For our take on the series, check out our review.

Will there be an Alien: Earth season 2?

No official announcement has been made by Hulu or Disney+ at the time of writing, but showrunner Noah Hawley remains optimistic. He recently stated in an interview with Polygon:

“I’m pretty confident, given the show’s success, that we’ll get to make more.”

That being said, he expressed a desire for the audience to see the conclusion of the story, adding that he would be satisfied if it ultimately ends with them filling in the narrative gaps.

When could Alien: Earth season 2 be released?

The series was first announced in 2020, but production faced several delays. Although pre-production had begun in Thailand in 2023, it was postponed due to the Hollywood strikes. Filming resumed and concluded in July 2024, with season 1 premiering on August 12, 2025.

If Disney decides to greenlight a second season, it’s reasonable to expect a quicker turnaround than four years. Thus, if we receive a confirmation by the end of this year, we predict that the next installment could premiere on Hulu and Disney+ as early as 2027.

When could Alien: Earth season 2 take place?

Initial reports suggested that the first season’s events occurred before “Prometheus,” but later speculation indicated that “Alien: Earth” is set in 2120, just two years before the original “Alien” film’s timeline.

Hawley later clarified that the series exists around the timeline of James Cameron’s “Aliens,” asserting that the original film’s events are referenced:

“I think we exist somewhere around Aliens, around the James Cameron story. I haven’t had to get crazy specific with it, but the events of the first film are referenced in the show at some point.”

This confirmation implies that the Xenomorph’s arrival on Earth occurred before the encounter with the Nostromo crew, complicating the franchise’s chronology significantly. If renewed for a second season, fans hope Hawley will clarify these plot connections.

What could the plot of Alien: Earth season 2 be about?

Spoilers for season 1 follow.

The first season concluded with many expected and some surprising developments, particularly for the character of Boy Kavalier, whose decisions led to dire consequences.

As the season progressed, Wendy and her friends notably radicalized, suggesting an intent to reshape the world—exemplified by Smee’s ominous declaration to the android Kirsh: “Your time is done. It’s our time now.”

While the creators have yet to outline a formal plot for season 2, several lingering questions remain:

1. What happened to Boy Kavalier and the other adults?

In the gripping season finale, the hybrid children turned against their creators. Boy Kavalier, along with other adult characters—Morrow, Dame Sylvia, Kirsh, and Atom Eins—were imprisoned at Prodigy facility, while Wendy commanded an adult Xenomorph and a newborn Chestburster, closing with the cryptic phrase, “Now we rule.” The fate of these adults remains uncertain; will they survive or be written out?

2. Will Yutani’s attack succeed?

Potential external conflict arises from the Yutani corporation, which seeks to reclaim alien specimens overwhelmed by Kavalier. Some soldiers have met their end by the Xenomorph, but with reinforcements potentially arriving, the future of Prodigy Island hangs in the balance.

3. What does the eyeball octopus want?

A formidable threat, the eyeball octopus, was also released alongside the other creatures, and its motives are still shrouded in horror. Reanimating Arthur’s corpse after the Chestburster incident adds layers to its threat. It may possess the desire to escape Earth or delve into a saga of its own.

4. What will Wendy and the Lost Boys do next?

With newfound power as hybrids alongside the Xenomorph, Wendy’s ambitions remain unclear. Is her goal domination over Prodigy Island, or is there grander ambition at play?

5. Who is Wendy and Joe’s mom?

Mystery surrounds the maternal figure depicted in flashbacks, leaving fans pondering her influence on the siblings. Could she be a character familiar to franchise followers?

6. Where does Wendy’s unusual bond with the Xenomorph come from?

Wendy’s unique connection to the Xenomorph, facilitated by her synthetic state, underpins the series’ intrigue. Delving into the origins and implications of this communication will be paramount in a potential second season.

Who is in the cast of Alien: Earth season 2?

Many characters in the series are hybrids resulting from the Phoenix Program, where ill children were given new synthetic bodies. Assuming the series is renewed, we can expect to see the following familiar faces return:

  • Sydney Chandler as Wendy, the pioneering hybrid kid,
  • Adarsh Gourav as Slightly, a hybrid boy who sees Wendy as an older sister,
  • Lily Newmark as Nibs, the youngest of the hybrids,
  • Jonathan Ayaji as Smee, a positive and naive hybrid,
  • Erana James as Curly, a child with a previously short life expectancy,
  • Alex Lawther as CJ, aka Hermit, Wendy’s brother who grew up in a human body,
  • Samuel Blenkin as Boy Kavalier, a genius child and CEO of Prodigy Corporation,
  • Timothy Olyphant as Kirsh, a synthetic mentor to Wendy,
  • Adrian Edmondson as Atom Eins, a trusted aide to Kavalier,
  • Essie Davis as Dame Silva, a brilliant geneticist at Prodigy Corporation,
  • Babou Ceesay as Morrow, a Yutani cyborg, and
  • Sandra Yi Sencindiver as Yutani, a senior member of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation.

Sadly, Kit Young’s Tootles was killed by fly-like creatures in season 1, but since he was synthetic, his consciousness may return in a different body. The character of David Rysdahl’s Arthur Silvia also has the potential to make a return; although he was killed by a Chestburster, his body was later reanimated by the eyeball octopus, paving the way for his return as something entirely different in season 2.
