Metropolitan Opera’s Triple Celebration: Artistry in Costuming, New Opera, and Contemporary Artwork

Last Sunday, the illustrious Metropolitan Opera in New York City marked a remarkable occasion with the celebration of three distinct openings, captivating opera lovers and art enthusiasts alike.

Behind the Seams: Costuming the Met

The first event was the unveiling of Behind the Seams: Costuming the Met, an exhilarating exhibition showcasing over 20 spectacular costumes and pieces that play a pivotal role in the 2025–26 season productions. This includes classics such as Carmen, La Traviata, and Tristan und Isolde. For Met ticketholders, the exhibit is accessible in the north and south galleries of Founders Hall located on the Concourse level of the opera house.

A Premiere Opera: The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay

In addition to the fashion-centric exhibition, the Met thrilled its audience with the company premiere of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. This new opera, adapted from Michael Chabon’s acclaimed Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, tells the compelling story of two Jewish comic-book artists who create a superhero to confront the looming dangers of Nazism.

Gallery Met’s ‘Super Duper’

The festivities continued with the launch of Gallery Met’s “Super Duper,” an innovative exhibition curated by Donatien Grau, head of contemporary programs at the Louvre, alongside longtime Vogue contributing editor, Dodie Kazanjian.

Exploring Contemporary Superheroes

The Super Duper exhibition runs throughout the opera house and features captivating new works by over 20 contemporary artists. Notable names include Roz Chast, George Condo, John Currin, Cy Gavin, Rashid Johnson, Toyin Ojih-Odutola, Anna Park, Nicolas Party, Julian Schnabel, Dana Schutz, Lorna Simpson, and Anna Weyant. Each artist was invited to imagine what signifies or embodies a superhero in today’s world. The exhibition also features two contributions from the iconic comic artist, Art Spiegelman.
