CBS News relayed:

“The South African government expressed ‘deep sorrow and profound regret’ at the untimely demise of Ambassador Nkosinathi Emmanuel ‘Nathi’ Mthethwa in an official statement sent to CBS News.

‘French authorities are currently conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death,’ the South African Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.”

“Reports indicate that Mthethwa was noted missing by his wife after she received a concerning text message from him. Subsequent investigation revealed that a window in his 22nd-floor room had been forcibly opened,” as reported by Reuters.

As it stands, French investigators are leaning towards the theory that Mthethwa may have taken his own life.

Previously, allegations had surfaced that Mthethwa, during his tenure as Police Minister, had interfered in a criminal investigation concerning a head of intelligence, suggesting that political machinations may have played a part in his circumstances.
