A Bronx Miracle: Gas Explosion Dismantles Privacy, But Not Lives
Early Wednesday, a gas explosion dramatically tore through a public housing building in the Bronx, carving out a significant section and raining bricks down onto the street below. The incident unfolded around 8:10 a.m. at the high-rise located in the Mitchel Houses project, just off Alexander Avenue, creating an alarming 20-story void in the building’s facade.
This shocking event prompted a rapid response from firefighters, who rushed to the scene as chaos reigned.
“It felt like the building was shifting beneath us,” recounted resident Merlyno Olivo, 51. “There was this enormous boom. My first thought was, ‘Is this an earthquake or something worse?’ It shook the place to its core.”
Linda Duke, 79, managed to escape down five flights of stairs with assistance from a younger resident, who literally had her back.
“Want to know how loud it was? Take a firecracker, light it, and listen closely,” Duke added with a shaky laugh. “It was chaos—smoke everywhere and no visibility. It was terrifying.”

A gas explosion in the Bronx on Wednesday morning led to a catastrophic corner collapse of the apartment building.
The blast reportedly compromised the incinerator shaft of the building.
