During a recent press conference, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson found himself deep in controversy after sidestepping a direct question about law enforcement and public safety. Johnson’s comments, regarding the deportation of an undocumented immigrant who allegedly committed a violent crime, stirred considerable backlash and raised questions about his stance on crime in the community.
At the event, reporter William Kelly posed a hypothetical question to Johnson, referencing a recent brutal incident where a Nicaraguan migrant was accused of attacking a woman in an alley. Kelly’s pointed question was simple: “If that had been your wife, Stacie, would you want ICE to deport that individual? Yes or no?”
Allegedly fueled by drugs, a migrant was said to have targeted a woman on the Northwest Side, leading to severe repercussions. Prosecutors label him as “a threat to all females” in the area.

Rather than addressing the pressing question, Johnson opted for a sarcastic rebuttal, mocking Kelly’s recent drop in YouTube viewership. Kelly quipped back that his numbers were still significantly higher than those of the mayor. As the interaction escalated, Kelly reiterated, “Answer as a man—not as a mayor.” Yet, Johnson refrained from providing a straightforward reply.

Moreover, Kelly criticized Johnson for what he termed “frivolous race-baiting,” pointing out that constituents he spoke with were upset over the mayor’s perceived prioritization of non-citizens over local residents. “The real Chicagoans I talk to, mainly from minority backgrounds, feel you lack distinction between illegal immigrants and legitimate residents,” Kelly asserted.
This situation is particularly ironic given that Johnson has criticized Trump’s efforts to address crime in Chicago as racially motivated. Irony is further compounded by the fact that the mayor is currently under federal investigation for remarks indicating he prefers hiring Black individuals based solely on their perceived positive traits.

In the realm of political discourse, it’s often noted that accusations may reflect one’s own vulnerabilities. Johnson’s labeling of opponents as “racist” can appear to be an effort to deflect from criticisms directed at him, particularly regarding his policies that some claim bolster the interests of undocumented residents over American citizens.
This prevailing narrative among some Democratic leaders hints toward a growing trend where the safety concerns of taxpayers are sidelined by a focus on immigration issues. Such dynamics must be examined critically to ensure the security and integrity of local communities are not undermined.
