MELBOURNE, Florida — A Florida man has been implicated in igniting the devastating Palisades Fire that ravaged significant portions of Los Angeles, and he was known to express views on social media linking global warming to wildfires.

Jonathan Rinderknecht, 29, frequently utilized Facebook to disseminate posts regarding ecological disasters, ridiculing President Trump and his followers, while advocating for veganism.

Among the articles he shared was one titled “Climate Change Will Force a New American Migration,” published by ProPublica, which featured a thumbnail depicting wildfires engulfing a California neighborhood.

This particular article from 2020 highlighted soaring temperatures on the West Coast.

In an eerie twist of fate, Rinderknecht is accused of igniting a brushfire on January 1, which allegedly was never fully extinguished and flared up six days later — resulting in the destruction of nearly 24,000 acres, claiming 12 lives, and damaging over 7,000 structures, with financial losses estimated at about $150 billion.

Other posts by the suspected arsonist on Facebook featured images of emotional Trump supporters post-2020 election, links to a Harris-Biden fundraising initiative, and additional alarmist climate-related headlines.

One of the articles he shared read, “Senator Kamala Harris Says Meat is Destroying the Planet.”

Another article stated, “Antarctica’s Ice Shelves Have Lost Millions of Metric Tons of Ice,” according to Scientific American.

A third article from Forbes claimed, “A Shift to Plant-Based Diets Would Create 19 Million Jobs in Latin America and the Caribbean.”

Moreover, in August 2020, Rinderknecht shared a post from Joe Biden asserting that Trump had inherited a stable economy from President Obama, but his reaction to the COVID-19 crisis had “destroyed it.”

One of the rare images of him featured a wild-eyed, mouth-open expression with his face painted as a skull and splattered with what appeared to be blood.

Additionally, he reportedly created unsettling AI-generated images depicting burning cities with masses of people escaping the chaos, prosecutors allege.

Rinderknecht had been residing in Los Angeles when he purportedly ignited the fire, later returning to his family home in Florida shortly thereafter.

Allegedly, he filmed the fire he started, reported it to authorities, and then returned to observe firefighters combating it, according to legal allegations.

Rinderknecht is currently being held without bail in Orlando.
