Diane Keaton is well-known for her choice to remain unmarried throughout her illustrious career in Hollywood, although she has had relationships with various high-profile individuals.
Keaton, who passed away in October 2025 at the age of 79, had openly discussed her reasons for choosing not to marry.
“It can be traced back to my mother, because, for me, much of my life does. I adore my dad, of course… but she was always there, while he was constantly busy working,” Keaton shared with Interview magazine in a 2021 feature. “He was diligently working and was indeed fascinating. He loved her too. She raised four kids, starting with me as the firstborn. I witnessed how much she sacrificed.
She elaborated, “I feel she prioritized family over her own aspirations, and she was the epitome of a wonderful mother. I think she is why I chose not to marry. I didn’t want to lose my independence. Additionally, no one has ever proposed to me, which might also be a valid point. I could have just said that and left it at that.”
Later, Keaton became a single mother in her 50s when she adopted two children, daughter Dexter and son Duke.

Woody Allen
Keaton and Allen’s relationship dates back to the 1970s, where rumors circulated that the character in 1977’s Annie Hall could have been inspired by her life. (She also starred in the film.)
“That’s not entirely accurate, but there are some elements of truth to it,” Keaton stated in a 1977 interview with The New York Times.
Both Keaton and Allen worked together on projects such as Play It Again, Sam and Love and Death.
While their romance lasted only a few years, Keaton insisted that they kept a friendly relationship.
In 2018, she tweeted, “Woody Allen is my friend and I continue to support him,” referring to the allegations that have been made against the director, which he denied.
Al Pacino
Keaton and Pacino’s romance began three years after they finished shooting 1971’s The Godfather. Their on-and-off relationship lasted until 1990.
“I was completely enamored with him. He was charming, incredibly funny, and a nonstop conversationalist,” she disclosed to People in 2017. “There was an air of a lost child about him, like a delightful eccentric genius. And oh my, he was stunning!”
In the year, Pacino was present at Keaton’s AFI Lifetime Achievement Award event. He concluded a heartfelt speech with, “I’ll love you always.”
Warren Beatty
Keaton had a brief romantic involvement with Beatty after they met while filming 1981’s Reds.
“My first encounter with Warren was watching Splendor in the Grass [in 1961]. He was, simply put, breathtaking—a dream come true,” she reflected in an interview with Variety in 2016. “Not only was he gorgeous and captivating, but he was also an incredible producer and director, making his appeal even more unique.”
