Yuichi Hirako is an artist based in Tokyo whose work explores the relationship between humans, nature, and the built environment in a vibrant and unique way. His latest solo exhibition, titled ORIGIN, is currently on display at the Okayama Prefectural Museum of Art as part of the Setouchi Triennale. The exhibition features large-scale sculptures, paintings, and installations that invite viewers into a surreal world filled with anonymous characters and whimsical settings.

One of the highlights of the exhibition is a sculptural installation of an oversized table covered with a feast of fruit, bakery items, and sea creatures, alongside relaxed cats, stacks of books, and floral arrangements. Another captivating piece is a giant bookcase filled with potted plants, books, figurines, and flowers, some of which defy the structure of the unit by growing up behind the shelves. These works play with perception and curiosity, urging viewers to explore the intricate details and hidden stories within each composition.

Hirako’s compositions often feature figures whose faces are obscured by cartoonish head coverings shaped like trees or antlers, adding an element of mystery and whimsy to the scenes. The artist’s use of vibrant colors and unique proportions further enhances the surreal and dreamlike quality of his work, creating a visual experience that is both captivating and thought-provoking.

ORIGIN is a multi-dimensional exhibition that spans indoor galleries, a courtyard, and a plaza, creating an immersive and engaging environment for viewers to explore. The show will be on display until November 9 in Okayama City, offering art enthusiasts the opportunity to experience Hirako’s uncanny world firsthand.
