A violent road rage incident in Edgewater on Monday morning left a 23-year-old woman injured and a man in custody, according to Chicago police.
The victim called 911 around 9:05 a.m. to report that she had been shot in the shoulder near Sheridan Road and Ardmore Avenue. She explained to authorities that she was driving a white Ford Escape when she got into an argument with a man at the Shell gas station at 5701 North Broadway. The altercation quickly escalated when the man pulled out a gun and fired several shots at her.
Emergency Medical Services rushed the woman to St. Francis Hospital in serious condition.
Shortly after the shooting, another 911 call was made by a woman who claimed that her boyfriend had fired a shot at a woman who had allegedly struck their car and thrown bottles at them near the scene of the shooting.
Police officers promptly responded to the call and met with the caller and her boyfriend in the 4800 block of North Marine Drive. The man was taken into custody, and a firearm was recovered from inside his vehicle.
This incident marks the 11th shooting in Edgewater this year, a decrease compared to the 20 shooting victims by the same time last year. However, 2024 was an anomaly year with a higher number of incidents than usual. For example, there were only five people shot in Edgewater in 2023 and 11 in 2022.

This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of road rage and the importance of de-escalation techniques in tense situations. It also highlights the ongoing issue of gun violence in Chicago and the need for stricter gun control measures to ensure the safety of all residents.
