Amazon Clashes with Perplexity Over AI Shopping Assistant

Amazon and Perplexity are at odds over the use of Perplexity’s AI-powered shopping assistant, Comet, on Amazon’s online store. Amazon has issued a cease-and-desist letter to Perplexity, citing violations of its terms of service related to Comet not identifying itself as an agent. Perplexity, in response, has accused Amazon of bullying and hindering innovation in the AI space.

Perplexity argues that Comet, acting on behalf of human users, should have the same permissions as the user and therefore does not need to identify itself as an agent. Amazon, on the other hand, points out that other third-party agents working on behalf of users do identify themselves to service providers.

Amazon’s statement emphasizes the importance of transparency and respect for service provider decisions in third-party applications. The concern is that allowing agents like Comet to operate without identification could lead to potential conflicts and restrictions on access to platforms like Amazon.

Perplexity suggests that Amazon’s motives may be driven by a desire to maximize advertising and product placements on its platform. A shopping bot like Comet, free from human biases, could pose a threat to traditional marketing strategies employed by e-commerce giants.

This dispute between Amazon and Perplexity echoes a previous controversy where Perplexity was accused of scraping websites against their wishes. While some defended Perplexity’s actions as akin to standard web browsing, others criticized the company for using questionable tactics to bypass bot restrictions.

As the debate over agentic technology continues, the clash between Amazon and Perplexity raises questions about the future of online interactions between bots and websites. Will websites need to adapt to accommodate the rise of AI agents, or will they opt to block them entirely?

Amazon’s stance on requiring agent identification sets a precedent for how online platforms may regulate AI-driven interactions in the future. As a major player in e-commerce, Amazon’s actions could shape the direction of AI development and usage in the digital space.
