The Biggest and Brightest Full Moon of 2025: The Beaver Supermoon

The upcoming full Moon on November 5 is set to be the largest and brightest of the three full supermoons in 2025. As the Earth, Moon, and Sun align perfectly, the Moon will be closer to Earth than at any other point in the year, giving it a slightly larger appearance in the night sky.

For those who enjoy stargazing, this is the perfect opportunity to witness the beauty of the Moon in all its glory, especially if you have a telescope or astrophotography equipment ready to capture the moment.

Supermoons are a natural occurrence due to the Moon’s slightly oval orbit around Earth. Because the orbit is not perfectly round, the Moon can sometimes be closer to Earth or farther away than its average distance of 384,400 kilometers.

The closest point of the Moon’s orbit is known as the lunar perigee, while the farthest point is the apogee. The mean distance of the Moon from Earth at perigee is 363,396 kilometers, and at apogee, it is 405,504 kilometers.

While there are approximately 13 lunar perigees each year, not every perigee qualifies as a supermoon. The term ‘supermoon’ is typically used to describe the full or new Moon that occurs at perigee.

The supermoon in November 2025 will come within a distance of just 356,980 kilometers, making it a spectacular sight to behold. The last time we witnessed a full supermoon this close was in February 2019 when the perigee distance was 356,846 kilometers.

Known as the Beaver Moon, the November full Moon is officially dubbed the Beaver Supermoon. If you happen to miss this event, fret not, as December will also feature a full supermoon known as the Cold Supermoon, although the perigee distance will be slightly farther at 357,219 kilometers.

Regardless of the specific supermoon event, any opportunity to gaze at the Moon is a special one. So, step outside and marvel at the beauty of our celestial neighbor while embracing the wonders of our cosmic journey through the Milky Way.
