The Toronto Maple Leafs are currently facing some serious concerns after suffering back-to-back losses that have highlighted major issues with their defense and goaltending. With recent defeats to the Carolina Hurricanes (5-4) and the Boston Bruins (5-3), the Leafs’ record has now dropped to 8-7-1 for the season. They currently sit in sixth place in the Atlantic Division, trailing behind Montreal and Boston, both of which have 10 wins each.

The departure of Mitch Marner to the Vegas Golden Knights has caused a shift in the Leafs’ identity. NHL insider Carlo Colaiacovo, speaking on First Up, pointed out that the team’s strength from last season has now become their biggest weakness. Many believed that despite Marner’s absence, the Leafs would still excel due to their intact defense and returning goaltenders. However, so far this season, their defense and goaltending have been major weaknesses.

The Leafs started the 2025-26 season with a strong 5-2 victory over Montreal, but have since struggled with inconsistency. They currently average 3.69 goals per game but allow 3.75, one of the highest rates in the league. Colaiacovo also highlighted concerns about starting goalie Anthony Stolarz’s performance (6-5-1), especially after allowing 4 goals on 19 shots in a recent game against the Bruins. Stolarz has been under increased pressure due to the absence of goalie Joseph Woll for personal reasons.

Colaiacovo pointed out a lack of structure and trust among the players as a key factor in the team’s breakdown. He mentioned that the lack of trust between the defense, forwards, and goaltenders has led to turnovers and poor decision-making on the ice.

Following Sunday’s loss to the Hurricanes, Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube expressed his frustration with the team’s performance, citing turnovers and poor defensive play as the reasons for their recent defeats. To remain competitive, the Leafs must focus on rebuilding trust among players, improving defensive discipline, and stabilizing their goaltending before their season slips away.

In conclusion, the Toronto Maple Leafs are currently facing significant challenges on both ends of the ice. It is crucial for them to address their defensive and goaltending issues quickly in order to turn their season around and climb up the standings in the Atlantic Division.
