On November 11, 2025, a powerful solar storm is brewing that could trigger far-reaching auroras across the United States. The sun has unleashed several coronal mass ejections, with one of the most powerful solar flares of the current solar cycle emanating from active region 4274 (AR4274).

This solar storm has the potential to spark auroras as far south as northern California and Alabama. The rapid outbursts from AR4274 have been followed by a coronal mass ejection, or CME, which is a massive cloud of magnetized plasma propelled into space by the sun. Earth is in the path of this CME, hurtling towards us at a staggering speed of 3.3 million miles per hour. Additionally, it may combine with two previous, slower CMEs that occurred earlier in the week.

In response to these solar activities, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a G4 geomagnetic storm watch for Wednesday. This alert signifies a severe geomagnetic storm that could potentially interfere with power grids, spacecraft operations, satellite navigation, and radio communications.

Space weather prediction is crucial for anticipating and mitigating the effects of solar storms on Earth. Despite the potential disruptions, the prediction of space weather continues even during challenging times, such as federal government shutdowns.

Unfortunately, the peak of auroral activity is expected to coincide with daylight hours in North America, making the auroras invisible to observers. However, geomagnetic turmoil is forecasted to continue into Thursday at a strong G3 level, which could still trigger auroras as far south as Illinois and Oregon.

In conclusion, the solar storm brewing from AR4274 has the potential to create stunning auroras across the United States. Stay informed about space weather predictions and support science journalism to continue learning about the wonders of our universe.
