Lynn Hershman Leeson, a renowned artist and filmmaker, shares a captivating memoir in her book “Private I.” The book delves into her fascinating life story, filled with unique experiences and challenges that shaped her into the artist she is today. With permission from the author, we have extracted excerpts from her memoir to provide a glimpse into her remarkable journey.

Born in 1941 in Cleveland, Ohio, Lynn grew up in a close-knit Jewish family with Hungarian and Russian roots. Her grandparents, Rose and Martin, and Louis and Lena, had immigrated to the United States in search of a better life, escaping the horrors of antisemitism in Europe. Lynn’s childhood was filled with adventures with her grandmother, Gram, who had a talent for assuming different identities and engaging in secret escapades.

Despite facing challenges such as not speaking until the age of seven and concerns about being “retarded,” Lynn’s family instilled in her a sense of resilience and creativity. Gram’s culinary skills and business acumen, coupled with her grandfather’s mysterious disappearance, instilled in Lynn a fascination with multiple identities and the power of storytelling.

As Lynn navigated her family’s complex history and her own journey of self-discovery, she found inspiration in the lives of those around her. From encounters with Holocaust survivors to witnessing the Harlem Globetrotters train, Lynn’s experiences shaped her artistic vision and fueled her curiosity about the world.

Through her memoir, Lynn reflects on the MacGuffin of her life – the driving force behind her creative pursuits and personal growth. With each chapter revealing new insights and revelations, Lynn invites readers to join her on a journey of self-discovery and artistic exploration.
