John Beam, a beloved football coach who gained national recognition through Netflix’s sports docuseries “Last Chance U,” tragically passed away on Friday morning after being shot on the campus of Laney College in Oakland. He was 66 years old at the time of his death. The Oakland police have confirmed that a suspect, 27-year-old Cedric Irving Jr., has been arrested in connection with the shooting incident that took place at the college’s field house.

Coach Beam, who also served as the athletic director at Laney College, was a highly respected figure in the local community and beyond. Known for his dedication to his players and his leadership both on and off the field, Beam’s impact was felt by all who knew him. In a statement released by his family and read by the police at a press conference, they expressed their deep sorrow at the loss of their beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, coach, mentor, and friend. They also thanked everyone for their prayers, well-wishes, and thoughts during this difficult time, requesting privacy as they grieve their loss.

During his tenure as the head football coach of the Laney College Eagles, Coach Beam led the team to great success, winning two league titles and helping 20 of his former players make it to the NFL. His coaching style and mentorship were prominently featured in the fifth season of “Last Chance U,” showcasing his ability to inspire and guide young athletes towards success both on and off the field. The season served as a fitting tribute to his legacy as a coach and a mentor.
