In a shocking turn of events, a 68-year-old man who had fled the country following his questioning in a 2004 Gold Coast homicide has been extradited from Peru and charged with first-degree murder. David Barklow is the prime suspect in the fatal shooting of 40-year-old Kent Projansky inside Projansky’s apartment on North Dearborn Street more than a decade ago.

The gruesome murder took place on December 18, 2004, when Projansky’s body was discovered with five gunshot wounds in his 30th-floor apartment. The investigation revealed that Projansky, who was known to sell cannabis and keep large sums of cash in his unit, was targeted for robbery.

Neighbors reported hearing gunshots and seeing a suspicious individual leaving Projansky’s apartment shortly after the crime. A duffel bag containing incriminating evidence, including a revolver with a defaced serial number, was found near Barklow’s mother’s home in Park Ridge.

Despite fleeing to Canada, Sweden, and eventually settling in Ecuador, Barklow’s fingerprints and DNA were linked to the crime scene through forensic analysis. His attempt to mislead authorities by claiming innocence was debunked with concrete evidence, leading to his extradition and subsequent detention pending trial.

Cook County State’s Attorney Eileen O’Neill Burke commended the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies in bringing Barklow to justice. The reopening of the cold case in 2017 and utilization of advanced forensic technology played a crucial role in connecting Barklow to the heinous crime committed over a decade ago.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the victims’ families and authorities remain steadfast in their pursuit of justice, underscoring the unwavering commitment to holding perpetrators accountable, regardless of the passage of time.
