In summary
– Nothing OS 4.0 officially released
– Rollout begins on 21 November with Phone (3)
– Includes refreshed design, Extra Dark Mode, AI monitoring tool, and more
British tech company Nothing has officially launched Nothing OS 4.0, its new smartphone UI based on Android 16. This update brings a host of exciting new features for users to enjoy.
Nothing first introduced its NOS 4.0 alongside the debut of the Nothing Phone (3) in early July, with a projected release timeframe of “early autumn”. The rollout finally commenced on 21 November, starting with the Phone (3) model.
As of now, it is uncertain when other Nothing handsets will receive the update, although all Nothing phones except for the 2022 Phone (1) are compatible with Nothing OS 4.0.
Nothing OS 4.0 new features
Ahead of the rollout, Nothing has provided a post outlining some of the enhancements that users can expect from Nothing phones.
The update promises a more fluid and intuitive design, featuring a cleaner Quick Settings menu, a more responsive lock screen, an always-on display, and a selection of redesigned lock screen clocks.
A new Extra Dark Mode has been introduced, taking Nothing’s signature dark aesthetic to the next level. This enhanced level of contrast not only saves power but also reduces eye strain, all while looking sleek and stylish.
Furthermore, an AI Usage Dashboard will keep users informed about the Large Language Models (LLMs) operating in the background. This AI feature sets Nothing apart from competitors like the Google Pixel 10 Pro.
Another notable addition is the Pop-up View, which allows users to utilize two floating apps simultaneously. By swiping up from the bottom edge to minimize an app and pulling down to expand it, multitasking becomes more seamless.
Nothing also promises enhancements to the camera experience, with an upgraded Camera app and a smarter Gallery. While the exact impact of these improvements remains to be seen, users can expect a more refined photographic experience.

To check for the update on your phone, navigate to Settings > System > System Updates and manually check for any available updates. It may be necessary to install any pending updates before Nothing OS 4.0 becomes available for installation.
