Legendary actress Judi Dench has recently shared a heartbreaking update on her degenerative eye condition, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which she was diagnosed with in 2012. In a candid confession, the beloved star revealed that her condition has rapidly progressed to the point where she can no longer recognize loved ones.
AMD is a leading cause of vision loss in individuals aged 60 and over, and it has significantly impacted Dench’s life and career. The condition has made it challenging for her to read scripts and watch TV, and she now requires assistance with daily tasks, including leaving her home. This has also led to Dench’s absence from cameras, as she explained in a recent interview for a Shakespeare teaching resource alongside her longtime co-star Ian McKellen.
In a clip from ITV News, Dench and McKellen were seen playfully trying on costume pieces at The Royal Shakespeare Company. When asked about her absence from cameras, Dench candidly admitted, “No, because I can’t see anymore.” McKellen sweetly reassured her, saying, “We can see you.”
The 90-year-old actress further revealed that her condition has worsened to the point where she struggles to recognize anyone. Despite her challenges, Dench maintains a sense of humor about the situation, joking about going up to total strangers and saying, “Lovely to see you again.” She has found alternative ways to cope with her condition, such as having friends repeat lines to her repeatedly to help her learn them.
In a recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Dench opened up about her struggles with memorizing lines, as she relied on her photographic memory in the past. She expressed the need to find a machine that not only teaches her lines but also indicates where they appear on the page. Despite these challenges, Dench remains resilient and determined to continue her craft.
Dench’s last major film appearance was in 2022’s Allelujah, and she has since made appearances in documentaries as herself. She humorously admitted that she currently has no major projects lined up due to her deteriorating eyesight. When asked by a journalist about acting in the future, she jokingly replied, “No, no, I can’t even see!”
Despite the challenges posed by her condition, Judi Dench continues to inspire audiences with her talent, resilience, and unwavering spirit. Her candidness about her struggles serves as a reminder of the importance of perseverance and adaptation in the face of adversity.
