U.S.-Venezuelan producer Elizabeth Avellán has recently completed principal photography on the supernatural thriller “Bonded,” marking a significant milestone for her new film hub based in the Canary Islands. Avellán, known for her work on iconic films such as “El Mariachi” and the “Spy Kids” franchise, has assembled an impressive cast for “Bonded,” including Demián Bichir, Gala Bichir, and Bruno Bichir in their first feature collaboration.
The film, directed by Venezuelan filmmaker Gisberg Bermúdez, was shot in locations such as La Esperanza in Tenerife and Austin, Texas, showcasing the diverse settings available to filmmakers in the Canary Islands. Avellán’s production company, Anaga Media Productions, is taking advantage of the region’s favorable tax incentives and is paving the way for collaborations between Texan and Canarian filmmakers.
“Bonded” follows the story of a grieving father and his daughter who encounter supernatural forces in a haunted farmhouse, intertwining their grief with that of a family from the past. The film delves into themes of loss and explores the concept of time non-linearly through visions and time slips.
In addition to producing films, Avellán is also committed to nurturing local talent in the Canary Islands. Through training programs and partnerships with educational institutions, she aims to provide opportunities for aspiring filmmakers to gain hands-on experience in the industry.
As “Bonded” enters the editing stage, Avellán is optimistic about its potential success on the festival circuit. The film is expected to be completed within six months, with plans to submit it to prestigious festivals such as SXSW. Anaga Media Productions is gearing up for a slate of new projects, including thrillers, genre films, and documentaries, with a focus on collaboration with partners in Texas and Latin America.
For Avellán, the Canary Islands offer a wealth of opportunities for filmmakers, thanks to their diverse landscapes and rich cultural heritage. She envisions the region becoming a hub for international productions, showcasing the unique stories and locations that the islands have to offer.
In a time of uncertainty for the film industry, Avellán’s return to independent cinema and focus on filmmaker-driven projects signal a new chapter in her career. With “Bonded” set to make its mark on the festival circuit, Avellán’s vision for the Canary Islands as a thriving film hub is steadily becoming a reality.
