The Ongoing Feud Between Bill Cosby and Eddie Murphy
Bill Cosby’s career came crashing down after numerous allegations of rape and sexual assault were brought against him. He faced both civil and criminal cases, served three years in prison, and has been out of the spotlight since 2014.
In 2018, Cosby was found guilty on three counts of aggravated indecent assault and was sentenced to a possible decade behind bars. However, in 2021, the Pennsylvania State Supreme Court overturned his conviction, leading to his release. Over 60 women have accused Cosby of various offenses, including rape, drug-facilitated sexual assault, and sexual harassment.
The alleged incidents occurred over several decades in multiple U.S. states and Canada, with a common thread being Cosby’s alleged use of drugs. Women claim Cosby offered them drinks or pills that left them incapacitated and unable to resist his advances.
In a 2005 deposition, Cosby admitted to obtaining drugs with the intent of using them for sex. Many accusers were aspiring actresses or models who viewed Cosby as a mentor, only to be taken advantage of when they were vulnerable.
Cosby has denied all allegations and maintained his innocence, claiming the encounters were consensual. Despite the lack of criminal charges due to statutes of limitations, numerous civil lawsuits have been filed against him.
Eddie Murphy’s feud with Cosby dates back to a phone call from Cosby criticizing Murphy’s humor. Murphy has taken jabs at Cosby during public appearances, including his acceptance speech for the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
Murphy’s return to Saturday Night Live in 2015 included a dig at Cosby, which prompted a response from Cosby’s spokesperson. The feud escalated with accusations of jealousy and animosity from Cosby towards Murphy.
Despite the ongoing feud, both comedians have left a mark on the entertainment industry, with their legacies intertwined in a complex web of humor and controversy.
