I was first introduced to the vibrant and captivating fiber paintings of Kandy G. Lopez at ACA Galleries’ booth during the 2024 Armory Show. Nestled in the bustling Javits Center in New York City, Lopez’s larger-than-life portraits immediately caught my eye amidst the chaos of the art fair. Her work exudes a sense of style and personality, with bold colors and intricate patterns that draw you in closer.
Inspired by the Afro-Caribbean artist Barkley L. Hendricks, Lopez’s portraits of her diverse Miami community are a celebration of individuality and resilience. What sets her work apart is the meticulous detail and craftsmanship that goes into each piece. Spending hours in her studio, Lopez hand-embroiders each figure, creating a sense of depth and texture that is truly mesmerizing.
In addition to her fiber paintings, Lopez also works in prints, paint, and glass, showcasing her versatility as an artist. Despite juggling a busy schedule as an associate professor and a mother of two, Lopez has continued to hone her craft and push the boundaries of her practice.
2025 has been a standout year for Lopez, with accolades including winning the Orlando Museum of Art’s People’s Choice Award and securing a residency at the Galleries of Ringling College of Art and Design. Her first international solo exhibition at the Florence Fondation in Paris was a testament to her growing recognition in the art world.
Most recently, ACA Galleries unveiled Lopez’s second solo exhibition, “Textile Truths: Faces of Resilience,” which showcases her technical prowess and artistic evolution. Each portrait, whether a solo figure or a group scene, captivates with its photorealism and intricate detailing. Lopez’s confidence shines through as she experiments with three-dimensional elements like cowrie shells and explores new ways to play with negative space and composition.
One standout piece from the exhibition is “Poetic Justice,” a striking portrait that exemplifies Lopez’s ability to blend realism with artistic expression. The figure’s bold outfit and commanding pose exude a sense of agency and empowerment, challenging traditional notions of portraiture.
As I marveled at Lopez’s work in person, I couldn’t help but be inspired by her dedication to her craft and her ability to capture the essence of her subjects with such precision and flair. With each stitch and brushstroke, Lopez brings her portraits to life, inviting viewers to see the world through her vibrant and dynamic lens.
